Last week another historical moment was added to what has been a very special year so far, with the announcement of our first ever Women’s Leadership Group.
The 5 woman group, headed by captain Mara McSweeney, was appointed by a player vote and announced at training on Tuesday, capping off a wonderful first pre-season and signalling the beginning of the season proper.
McSweeney, 22, is joined at the helm by vice-captain Kaylyn MacKenzie, Ella Ingram, Victoria Bryce and Bianca Michetti. Together they will lead a group of women that began the summer as inexperienced and apprehensive first timers but now are footballers who’s confidence and hunger grows by the day, which pleases no one more than their new captain.
Speaking after the side’s first ever practice match against South Melbourne on Sunday the dynamic midfielder was quick to express how proud she is of the giant strides her team is taking.
“We have come so far in the last 5 months building a powerful energy and culture, but the most exciting part is that we know there is so much improvement to come” she said “It’s an absolute honor to be chosen by the players as their leader and I will be doing everything I can to make sure we have the best year possible”.
UHS-W’s final dress rehearsal comes in the form of the VAFA Lightning Cup this Sunday 2nd April at Sportscover Arena, Elsternwick. Games are at 9am, 11am and 1pm as well as a possible 3pm Grand Final.
Prior to this will be another historic moment with the first ever Jumper Presentation on Saturday April 1st, 6:30pm at Brens Oval which all supporters and families are encouraged to attend.
Round 1 cannot come sooner!
