University High School-Victoria University Amateur Football Club (UHSVU) is a community-based football club located in Parkville.
The club began as the University High School Old Boys in 1932, and has played in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) since our inception and has a rich history.
The club in 2002 formed an alliance with Victoria University to offer an attractive option to VU students wishing to play local footy.
In 2006 we also developed an affiliation with the Flemington Junior Football Club to offer local junior footballers an opportunity to continue their playing careers through to a senior level.
Where do we play?
UHSVU plays and trains at Brens Oval, in Parkville, which is in Melbourne’s inner north and close to the CBD. The oval is located off Macarthur Road, in Royal Park directly in front of Melbourne Zoo.
We are ideally located for residents of Parkville, North Melbourne, Kensington/Flemington, Carlton and Brunswick. Our ground is also handy to many students living in the area and/or attending the nearby University of Melbourne, Monash (Pharmacy), RMIT (City) and Victoria University.
Public transport is available using tram route 19 (along Royal Parade), tram route 55 (stops at Melbourne Zoo) and Royal Park Railway Station (Upfield Line). Macarthur Road is also close to major roads including Royal Parade/Sydney Road, Citylink, Tullamarine Freeway and Eastern Freeway/Alexandra Parade.
Ground and Facilities
Our facilities are first-rate with a large ground located in picturesque Royal Park, which has automated watering and excellent lighting.
The change-rooms are large and spacious with recently purchased personal lockers. There is also a well equipped gym with weights, exercise bikes and boxing equipment. Our affiliation with Victoria University also allows some access to their extensive gym and indoor pool facilities at the Footscray campus. The club employs trainers and a physiotherapist to assist with injury management and player recovery.
The social rooms at UHSVU rank with the best in the VAFA. The room overlooks the playing arena and features a fully stocked bar and can cater for up to 120 diners at club functions.
Seniors / Reserves
Seniors and Reserves teams play in section D3 of the VAFA.
The VAFA is the largest and oldest senior football competition in Australia and is comprised of more than 70 clubs.
The VAFA competition is well managed and continues to grow. It has an excellent reputation in regards to the behaviour of players, spectators and officials. The consumption of alcohol is prohibited during all matches (with the exception of approved club functions), which encourages a friendly family atmosphere.
Senior games are almost always played on Saturday afternoons at 2pm, with Reserves matches commencing at 11.40 am.
This is our third senior team, which plays in a separate section of the VAFA. The focus of Club 18 is more on enjoyment and participation. Teams are allowed to have up to 8 interchange players. Generally the Club 18 team plays at home when the Seniors/Reserves are away.
This team also plays in the VAFA and is strongly connected to Flemington Juniors. It provides the next step in football development for Flemington Juniors players coming from the WRFL Under 16s competition. The Under 18s team also attracts students from University High School as well as residents in nearby suburbs such as Carlton, North Melbourne, Kensington and Flemington. The Under 18s usually play home games at 9:20am at Brens Oval prior to the Reserves and Senior games. Away games can be played at varying times on Saturdays.
Past Players/Supporters Luncheon
This function is held once a season and sees a big roll up of former players and officials coming to Brens Oval to enjoy a fully catered meal and drinks, and also watch that Saturday’s games.
